The Sullivan homestead, now
recorded as a National Historic Site, was built airca 1723
by Hugh Adams, but occupied by a nephew before being sold
to lawyer John Sullivan in 1740. Note the slave house at the
left and the "necessary" on the side hill. It was
from here that the attacking party went to New Castle on 15
December 1774 and brought back the powder and small arms to
be concealed in the Meeting House nearby. Fired upon by irate
mortgagees, and attacked at Sullivan's death in 1795 for unpaid
debts, it still stands in a restored condition. |
